  1. when u make designs in sand then pour plaster or whatever molding material in it so it takes the form of whatever design u put in the sand.

  2. Sand casting typically uses something called green sand which is a mixture of sand and clay that can pack together and hold its shape.  Sand is poured into a form and then a pattern the shape of the finished part is pressed into the sand.  If the casting is for something that is not flat on one side, there is a pattern for each half, the two half molds are put together, along with a sandy core if the part is to be hollow.  Metal is poured into the mold and the sand knocked or brushed off once it cools.

Another type of sand casting with better precision for small parts is mix of sand and resin poured onto a hot pattern, the resin hardens forming a shell mold, lose sand is dumped off, and metal is poured into the mold (similarly usually 2 half molds, often with core).

  3. Dans casting is often used with materials that are too volitile to have normal casts. they are basically just patterns pressed into sand and then the material is poured it. ive see this with iron being cast. in candy making they use the same technique but with corn starch instead of sand. then they pour in th gummi bear mixture or w/e it is. the only draw back is that the cast always has a large flat side, because when pressing the mold the top always has to be the largest and widest part.
