What is santa cruz like?

I went to santa barbara and loved it. Will santa cruz be similar? I am thinking of going there for college. Is there any night life there? Is that a place where many tourist go? I also went to san luis obispo and heard that there is nothing to do there. Is Santa Cruz the same?
