  1. Sculling is an easy back and forth motion of the hands, or figure eight motion, as the previous answerer has said.

Finning is simply imitating the motion of a fish's fins with the hands & wrists, more a paddling or pushing motion in the water.  But very similar to sculling in its effect on a person's motion in the water.

Either or both techniques can be used while treading water, and are also used in synchronized swimming.  Finning can also be used for moving while back floating, either head-first or feet first.  Try it, its kind of fun!

  2. hey im on the swim team and boy oh boy this can be a little hard to learn with out actuially seeing it so watch these videos and... you dont have to get wet to see them for yourself enjoy and thank god for youtube :P good luck on ur test.

  3. Sculling is when you use your hands in a circular or figure 8 motion.  It is used to help swimmers get better at "grabbing" water.  It can be done with or without paddles.

I have never heard the term "finning."  However, it can be used to describe using rubber training fins to aid in your kick, much in the same way paddles are used to assist in sculling.
