  1. It's a shipping canal. It links the Palk Bay and the Gulf of Mannar. It's between India Sri Lanka. It goes through the island chain of Rama's bridge (aka Adam's bridge). It's just an easy sea route to ship goods. It was thought of in like 1860 by a man named Alfred Dundas Taylor. It just recently been approved by the Indian government.

  2. What is Sethusamudram  Channel?

India has a peninsular coast of 7517Kms studded   with 12 major ports and 185 intermediary and Minor ports and has had maritime trade with various countries of the world since time immemorial.  Also shipping trade between the east and west coasts of India has prevailed for a long time.  But the coast of India does not have a continuous navigation channel connecting the east and west coasts.  Currently the ships coming from the west coast of India and other western countries with destination in the east coast of India and also in Bangladesh, China etc have to navigate around Srilankan coast.  The existing water way is shallow and not sufficient for the movement of ships.  This is due to the presence of a shallow region known as Adam’s bridge, located southeast of Rameswaram near Pamban, which connects the Talimannar Coast of Srilanka.

Due to these factors, the ships originating from west of India and destined for Chennai, Ennore, Vishakapatnam, Paradeep, Haldia and Kolkata have to travel around Srilankan coast resulting in increase of travel distance and time.  Apart from this ships belonging to Indian Navy and Coast Guard need also to traverse around Srilanka.

In order to reduce the steaming distances between the East and West Coast of India and to improve the navigation within territorial waters of India, a navigation channel connecting the Gulf of Mannar and Palk Bay through north of Adam's Bridge has been envisaged  so that the ships moving between the east and west coasts of India need not go around Sri Lanka.

    About Sethusamudram Ship Channel Project

Sethusamudram Ship Channel Project, which envisages dredging of a ship channel across the Palk straits between India and Srilanka, is finally taking shape.  The project will alllow ships sailing between the east and west costs of India to have a straight passage through India's territorial waters, instead of having to circumvent Sri Lanka.  This will lead to a saving of upto 424 nautical miles (780 Km) and upto to 30 hours in sailing time.

Two channels will be created - one across north of Adam's Bridge (the chain of islets and shallows linking India with Sri Lanka)  South - east of Pamban Island and another through the shallows of Palk Bay, deepening the Palk straits.  The total length of these two channels would be 89 Kms.

Sethusamudram Ship Channel Project proposes linking the Palk Bay and the Gulf of Mannar between India and Sri Lanka by creating a shipping channel through the shallow sea sometimes called Setu Samudram, and through the island chain of Rama's Bridge, also known as Adam's Bridge. This would provide a continuous navigable sea route around the Indian Peninsula. The project involves digging a 44.9 nautical mile (83 km) long deepwater channel linking the shallow water of the Palk Strait with the Gulf of Mannar. Conceived as early as 1860 by Alfred Dundas Taylor, it recently received approval of the Indian government. Government of India plans to break limestone shoals called Ram's Bridge or Ram sethu as part of implementation of this project. A few organizations are opposing damage to Ramasethu on religious, environmental and economical grounds. Many of these parties or organizations support implementation of this project using one of the 5 alternative alignments considered earlier[1][2] without damaging a structure considered sacred by Hindus. Current alignment is planned as Mid-ocean channel which is unprecedented. Other famous shipping canal projects like Suez Canal and Panama Canal projects are land based channels.[3]

  3. This samunderm Must be done, completed soon, will be done, Have my word, will continued until complete.

  4. Sethusamudram became newsworthy in 2005 with the launch by the Government of India of the Sethusamudram Shipping Canal Project.

Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu M. Karunanidhi has taken a special interest in this project. Project plans for three fishery harbours and one shipping harbour. Rameshwaram will become one of the largest harbours in India at the end of this project.

The strategic advantages to India derive from obtaining a navigable sea route close to the coast, with a reduction in travel distance of more than 350 nautical miles (650 km) (for larger ships). The project is expected to provide a boost to the economic and industrial development of coastal Tamil Nadu. The project will be of particular significance to Tuticorin harbour, which has the potential to transform itself into a nodal port. The State Government has announced its proposal to develop 13 minor ports, including Ennore, Cuddalore, Nagapattinam, Thondi, Valinokam, Kolachel and Kanyakumari.

Development of the canal and ports is also expected to provide increased maritime security for Tamil Nadu.

    [edit] Controversy

  5. Literally "sethu" means 'bridge'. It is believed by the Hindus that the mythological Lord Rama built a bridge here to cross the sea to reach Sri Lanka. Hence the name "Sethu" gets significant.

The Government is trying to shallow the sea-bed further between these two countries and make it usable for ship movements. This project is called 'Sethu Samudram' project.

But how far it is strategically worth spending is doubtful in the revenue aspect, environmental aspect and the security aspect.

  6. Lot of benefits are there once we complete this project.

Shipping time will reduce .Vizag or Calcutta ships can pass by this route..instead enroute of Srilanka..

not only that , most of the eastern country ships are passing thru and touch the srilanka for fuelling now. After completion this route, no need to go to srilanka..

    saving fuel and time..

but political leaders are making hurdles and doing politics...they never think about Indias wealth..

because of their poor knowledge and unawareness of important advantages of that project..

Horrible.....literate people casting their votes for illiterate candidates....
