The psychotropic molecule in salvia is Salvinorin A. It has 2 general effects, one is anesthetic and impairs motor function (to the point where it is extremely difficult to move) and the other is hallucinogenic. The effects typically last less than half an hour and depending on the strength of the extract and your personal body chemistry you may have extremely vivid hallucinations or really no noticeable effect. Even in the absence of hallucinations though, there is a pretty good change of feeling somewhat "high".
