  1. Primer is a product used before foundation and other makeup to "prep" the skin.  Though different primers have different properties, they're usually associated with 1- making makeup last longer because they give something for it to adhere to, and 2- filling in lines and pores to foundation and other makeup will go on smoother.  There are primers sold for all over the face, and also for eyes and lips.

Some primers contain ingredients to go even further than prepping skin.  Some contain light reflecting particles to give a glowy look.  Some help reduce oil and shine.  Smashbox even has color correcting primers to even out red or yellow skin tones.  My favorite face primers are Bare Escentuals' Prime Time and Benefit's That Gal.  My favorite eye primer is Urban Decay Primer potion.

While primer in itself isn't bad for skin, keep in mind everyone's skin is different and different products can cause bad reactions in some people's skin that it may not in others.  My advice would be seek out a dept store makeup counter or Sephora and try on different primers (on different days) to make sure you don't get a reaction before purchasing.

  2. Skin infections are a common reason for patients to seek attention from dermatologists. This review seeks to survey topical antibiotics that might be useful for a dermatologist. The most common causes of skin infection are the gram-positive pathogens Staphylococcus aureus (eg, carbuncles, folliculitis impetigo, scalded skin syndrome) (1) and Streptococcus pyogenes (eg, erysipelas, cellulitis). (1) Other rarer causes of skin infections include Pseudomonas aeruginosa (eg, otis externa, hot tub folliculitis, and ecthyma gangrenosum), (2) Corynebacterium (eg, ulcers, (3) erythrasma, trichomycosis axillaris, and pitted keratolysis (4)), Erysipelothrix insidiosa, (eg, erysipeloid), and Haemophilus influenzae (eg, facial cellulitis in children)

  3. Skin primer evens out and smoothes the pores and shine a bit before putting on base or concealer. It is helpful but I never see it in drugstore brands, just in places like Ulta or Sephora, and it is usually pretty expensive. I don't think that it's necessary.

  4. Skin primer... primes your skin for foundation in order for the makeup to go on smoother and stay on longer. It is not bad for your skin at all because it is silicone based usually and doesn't clog pores. It's a must-have for any makeup wearer.

    Smashbox makes an amazing primer.
