What is so great about a land, sea and space grant institution?

I've been looking into colleges, and UAF (University of Alaska Fairbanks) says on its website that it's one of the few universities that can say it is a land, sea and space grant institution. I've tried looking it up, but everything I've found has been confusing. What does this mean and why is it considered a good thing to the students?

  1. Universities thrive on research, my guess is that they research and get grants in those areas. I guess to them its something unique. Some universities are only land grant, but I guess to them it means something by having their university be a triple grant university.
