A "soft 17" is a total of 17 where an ace is currently being counted as 11

It is actually any value of cards adding up to 17 that includes and Ace.  It is called soft 17 because it can be counted as a 7 or a 17...the Ace can be valued at 1 or 11.

So here are some possibilities:

Ace, 6

Ace, 3, 3

Ace, 5, Ace

Ace, 2, 4

Ace, 4, Ace, Ace,

And so on.  All of these combination can either be 7 or 17.
