  1. Soft water, The water that forms leather easily with soap.

Hard water, The water which contains the salts of calcium and magnesium dissolved in it. there are two distinct types of hard water.

    1. Temporary hard water - This can be removed by simply boiling the water.

    2. Permanent hard water - This can be removed by adding washing soda.

  2. Hardness is a measure of dissolved salt contents.  Soft water has few dissolved solids, hard water has a lot, relatively speaking.

  3. Soft water is low in (Ca,Mg) carbonates and sulphates. If you boil hard water the carbonates (CO3-) react to carbondioxide. The water becomes softer and the amount of carbonates is therefore also called temporary hardness in contrast to sulphates where this procedure doesn't work.

  4. The more minerals are in water the "harder" it is.  Water softeners remove the minerals from the water.

  5. Hard water has more minerals. It is better to shower using soft water. It takes longer to rinse but its better for your skin and hair
