  1. MAde of mud by earth worms.

  2. soil is the naturally occurring, covering of broken rock particles and decaying organic matter on the surface of the Earth, capable of supporting life. Soil particles pack loosely, forming a soil structure filled with pore spaces. These pores contain soil solution (liquid) and air (gas).

  3. chemically soil is made up os silicates of iron , aluminium,Ca and many other metals together with SiO2 i.e. silica.

  4. Roughly 99 percent of the world's soils derive from mineral-based parent materials that are the result of weathering.

Soil formation is the process by which rocks are broken down into progressively smaller particles and mixed with decaying organic material. Bedrock begins to disintegrate as it is subjected to freezing-thawing cycles, rain, and other environmental forces (I). The rock breaks down into parent material, which in turn breaks into smaller mineral particles(II). The organisms in an area contribute to soil formation by facilitating the disintegration process as they live and adding organic matter to the system when they die. As soil continues to develop, layers called horizons form (III). The A horizon, nearest the surface, is usually richer in organic matter, while the lowest layer, the C horizon, contains more minerals and still looks much like the parent material. The soil will eventually reach a point where it can support a thick cover of vegetation and cycle its resources effectively (IV). At this stage, the soil may feature a B horizon, where leached minerals collect.

  5. Google the "Soil Triangle"

  6. it is made of acidic solution released by rain and insects like earthworms.

  7. well naturally soil is just decomposed substances (eg leaves, animals, living stuff) put under slight pressure for a long time. but i dont know whats in the factory made stuff

  8. It really depends on the type of soil. Most soils are made mostly from decayed plant and animal matter, or biomatter(the same way compost is made of decaying plants) However you can also get soils that are made up of mostly sand and less biomatter. Around volcanoes you can get soils that are made up largely of volcanic ash from past eruptions, this can make the soil very rich for plant life.

Anyway most common soils are a mixture of biomatter, and a small amount of sand and gravel.

  9. Much of the earth's surface is covered with a blanket of disintegrated and decomposed rock and mineral fragments produced by weathering. When this is mixed with water, air  and decayed plant and animal remains(humus),soil forms. The mineral content  of the bedrock determines  the nutrient richness of the soil produced.

The soil-forming process works from the surface downwards, and variations in compositions and texture evolve at different depths.

A vertical section through the layers is called a soil profile. The top soil consists of organic and mineral material. The next layer is called subsoil.Below that comes partly altered parent material. The lowest layer is the unearthed bedrock.
