  1. A solar house is a house that ses the suns energy to power the house with little or no use for conventional power.

You can use solar for a hot water system that is on the roof or put on solar panals on the roof.

With this system you can set up you power meter (you would actualy buy a new digital meter) to monitor you power usage and if you use more power, you can get it off the grid and if you produce more power than you use, you can have a credit with the power company.

But their is a limit to the amount of power you can produce for the grid, in Australia it is about 5.5KWh. Anything else you would be considered as a power generator, which gives you a tonne of paperwork to complete to sell the power.

If your from Australia, go to the TAFE website (listed below) if outside try you local education provider.

But I have done this course and it is fun, you get to put up solar panels and play with wind turbines and learn how to create power.

Goodluck with the future and hope this helps.

    Cheers

  2. There are two types of solar energy; active solar and passive solar. Both are useful in their own way.  But passive solar has particular benefits.

Active solar uses solar panels made from silicon to collect the sun's energy and turn it into electricity. They're fairly inefficient in producing energy.  It's also hard to store the energy.  Typically, an active solar house must have expensive panels up on the roof and a battery storage system.

Passive solar houses utilize a clever method of home design to get most of their power from the sun.  They must be built on an east-west orientation.  The south wall faces the sun during the cold months of the year.  Typically there is a large window on this side of the house to collect solar energy.  The north side generally has no windows at all.  The east and west sides are proportionally smaller than the north and south.  The design may use clerestories, roof ponds and other mechanisms to increase the energy which is collected from the sun.  Also, there may be eaves or deciduous trees on the north side to help keep out the sun in summer.  Also, you can put a solar water heater on the roof.

The passive solar design is superior to the active solar design in many ways.  For example, there are some passive solar designs that don't cost much more to build than traditional homes.  There are houses like this in existence today that get almost all of their heating and cooling needs from the sun.  The primary advantages are a major savings in utility costs.  Also, since passive solar houses don't use as much electricity as traditional homes they're better for the environment.

There is, however, a new breakthrough in active solar technology.  It's called thin film solar.  The material can be incorporated into building materials and is dramatically less expensive than traditional solar panels.

  3. Uses sun to either heat water or create electricity on photo-volt cells. A roof is mainly required. i.e. if you live in flats you're screwed.

Solar power saves energy being produced by fossil fuels and is less polluting.
