Question:

What is some good software for use with camcorders?

I just bought a Sony DCR-HC38 model Mini DV camcorder, and I also picked up a firewire cable. Anyway, when looking at reviews for the camcorder, it was pretty universal that the software that comes in the pack is very bad, and I'm pretty ignorant of software out there, so what is a good program to pick up? Free programs would be great, but I'm willing to pay if there is no good freeware.

My goal is simply to transfer and save video onto the computer, and also be able to edit the video. By that I mean cut out parts I don't want, join parts together, and so forth, NOT make pretty borders or cool effects.

I really know nothing about how to do this or what is good, so any advice and suggestions would be appreciated. I haven't owned a camcorder in years and I used to just transfer video to VHS which is pretty obsolete now. Thanks in advance.

  1. I'm in general agreement with Nu'uanu, though if you want  to make DVDs you can use DVD Flick, which is free.  Windows Movie Maker is a good program to get started with, but it's very limited.  Video editing is subtle - the pros make it look simple, but there's a lot going on behind the scenes.  Have a look at Sony's Vegas Movie Studio when you start to find WMM's limitations - it's got plenty of bells and whistles but its real strength is its ability to make the subtle stuff easy.

  2. VideoSpin is a free brand new tool that allows you to create your own movie clips in minutes using your own videos and pictures. With this fully functional video editing software you can:

    * Mix videos, photos and music together

    * Add titles and transitions

    * Upload to the web in a snap!

    * Direct upload to YouTube and Flash support

  3. Since you didn't tell us what computer operating system you are on, Windows XP (with SP2) or newer comes with MovieMaker and Macintosh OSX comes with iMovie.

    Both will capture MovieMaker) or Import (iMovie the video when the camcorder is connected to the computer and the camcorder is on and in the Play/Edit mode.

    Both will edit and let you add transitions and cut video you don't want and add titles and all that...

    And to burn a DVD, WinDVD in Windows and iDVD in Macintosh...

  4. Have you tried the software that was supplied?? It may be all you need......After all if you don't like it just uninstall it.
