What is some good tennis training for a beginner?

I'm starting tennis and want to spend free time training. I cant hit at a wall at home since the wall is too low and the backyard is narrow.

  1. I started playing tennis when I was in 7th grade in a 5 acre field in my back yard.  I improved to the point of playing tennis at college. This is how I started.

    -A good starting point is to bounce the ball on your racket as many times as you can in 1 minute.

    -Then bounce the ball on the other side of the racket as many times as you can in one minute.

    -Practice bouncing the ball on concrete or asphalt as long as you can and work on control first and speed second.

    If you can bounce the ball on your racket 100 times or more in a minute (on all 3 of these drills) you have gotten good control.  This also strengthens up many of the muscles needed to play good tennis in your arm.

    You can also practice walking down a street and doing these same drills.  If you can jog and bounce a tennis ball on the ground with your racket with control you are on your way.  This should help.


  2. Get the grip right. Find the one you want to use and experiment with different grips. Continental is usually used in the beginning. Then try eastern and western grip, giving the ball more topspin.

    Squeeze a tennis ball in your hand to give them more strentgth when your not playing, squeeze the ball hard for about 10 seconds at a time.

    Learn the basics "right" from the beginning so you don't learn many bad habits. Go for classic tennis strokes and later when you know more you can vary your strokes and add more of your own style.

    The rackets nowadays are powerful and it is easier then in the old days to hit the ball back without having to hit it true in the sweet spot like in the old days. In my opinion a lot more people then before get by with poor quality tennis.

    Concentrate on watching the ball.

  4. If you are with a school, go through them. If not try some of these:

    * have someone through you a tennis ball and catch it only with the arm you would use to do a forehand.(your main arm)

    .... This is for hand eye cordination (sp)

    * Go in your street (if it isn't a busy one) and volley between you and someone else. Try little hits first and  then go further a part. This will teach you control.

    * If possible go to any nearby court and just wack away. This is so you can get a feel for the courts and the boundries.

  5. i would start building muscle, doing some cardio, and running/footwork drills... maybe lifting too. jumproping is really good and will help make you light on your toes for when you start playing. footwork is a really important part of tennis. i would then start to hit... with friends, coaches, what ever. the more hitting you can do, the better! :)

  6. Well one way is to find a friend and go try playing some matches on a court maybe at your nearest park. Also try weight-lifting so that you can improve the strength of your arm muscle. I am not sure if you have heard of fire fighters, but its a drill where you find a line on the ground(you can draw it will chalk) and have one foot on one side of the line, and the other foot on the other side of the line. Than jump back and forth like a shuffle and go faster and faster. It really helps for tennis training! Hope this helps!
