  1. Yes.  It's really true.  They eat snails and frog legs.  But they eat those here in the USA as well, especially down in the Southern states...think New Orleans!!

French cuisine is big on sauces, I have found based on several trips over.  They also do very fresh bread...in fact, no preservatives, so after one day it is no longer any good.  But it is fabulous!  And perhaps that is why it is fabulous.  They are also very well known for their pastries...and this will get you fat if you ever go to Paris.  There's a patisserie on every corner, I swear!!

France is also very well known for their wine and cheeses.

  2. I am a trained chef from Le Cordon Bleu in Paris.  So to answer your question, typical french food depends on what area of france you are speaking about.  In the north they use more heavy sauces, with cream and butter, and roux, in the south alot of fresh produce and fresh seafood.  They do eat snails (escargot) usually with a garlic parsley butter on top, very good.  And frog legs, which can be prepared similar to chicken legs.  A typical french dish would be beef wellington or braised rabbit or hangar steak with pomme frittes, roast duck with orange sauce (duck a'la orange) - leek tarts, caramalized onion bread pudding - coq a vin (chicken in red wine).  Hope that helps.

  3. Apart fm snails/frog legs it depends a lot on the region.

North: Fondue, Sauerkraut with Sausages,Ham etc.(Alsace),

    Onion Quiche

South: very mediterranean like Fish/Spoup ,vegetables (Ratatouille), olive based sauces, Cassoulet etc.
