Self determination/nonintervention.  Usually referring to a country, wanting to make their own rules and own standards for their own people, and not wanting anyone(or country) to step in.

Sovereignty, is supreme power, or autonomy, as in an autonomous state.

The ability of a State to act without external controls on the conduct of its affairs.

Also applied to Native American Tribes as the ability of said tribes to act as dependent nations in their relations with the American Federal Government.
