  1. Of course it's bad to be born with a mental disorder. However, special education would be good for those people because they won't have to struggle as much in their education.

  2. There is nothing wrong being in special education. Some individuals learn differently or maybe just a bit slower than others. Some individuals need one-on-one assistance. Some of the smartest kids I know are in special education. I am a Sped teacher. Many of my students just need information given to them verbally and written. Others just need extra tutoring. Some do have extra challenges because of other disabilities. These students just need to have someone there to help them a little bit more who understand them.

  3. In order to qualify for placement within the special ed. department,  a person needs to be tested to assess their mental age, ie what a typical person of their age level should be able to do, against their actual age.  If their are found to be working at a level at least 2 years below the level that they should be at they qualify for additional help in order to bring them up to grade level.  Many children who are in special ed. have some form of learning disability, ie dyslexia or add or autism (typically the most common learning disorders).

However, this does not mean that they are "bad" or "stupid".  It simply means that they need more attention that a typical teacher can give them and different ways in which to learn the material.  Many special ed. teachers work with students to bring them up to grade level.  Some students, while in the special ed. department, simply need additional resources in order to help them cope with their disability and learn ways in which they can learn best.

Many people with learning disabilities have gone on to to become mayors, such as Gavin Newsom (mayor of SF).  So no, it is not bad.  Just different.

  4. special education.. is a class where kids with disabilities.. like hearing impaired, or autistic, or something that has to to do with mental disability it's okay.. um.. it's not bad.. uh.. i mean the kids were just born with it so they have to be in the special education class

  5. it is for people that need help with stuff in school. so it can b e bad but good

  6. its  good   .  it  mostly  means   one  to  one  extra  help  for  kids  that  need  it.eg  .   dyslexic  kids

a  special  plan   for  them  to  help   students  with  special  needs  like  dyxlexia  (reading  difficulty)   to  catch  up.  there  are  specially  trained  teachers  and  educational   materials......say  books  with  lots  of  pictures   rather  than  words  for  dyxlexic  kids.   hope  this  helps

  7. No it's not bad. It is a program in public schools that help children with learning disabilities

  8. well, it's a service given to children who learn differently from others or need their physical environment adapted so that they are not discriminated against.  Special education is a broad category, serving children with physical disabilities like cerebral palsy, spina bifida, and Blindness/Deafness (these students may or may not have intellectual deficits) to children with mental processing  issues such as Attention Deficit Disorder, Severe Learning Disabilities (those students have average intelligence, but academic skills below expectations), and Mental Retardation.

The services provided can range from having a staff member help students get organized, to tutoring, to classes where the curriculum is modified, to speech therapy, occupational and physical therapies, orientation help for the blind, and counseling services, to name a few.  All special education students also are eligible to get vocational help to help them plan their futures.  These services are provided by schools, and thus save parents lots of money.

So special education is not a bad thing, because it helps people get what they need to be successful students.  The 'bad rap' it gets is because all the different types of students are lumped into one group.  This is wrong thinking, and we all need to better about not jumping to conclusions.  The majority of students are referred to special education for reading difficulties and have average intelligence.

For the record, Gifted students fall under the same umbrella, because their education has to be special, too.  Gifted students don't get the same funding, but schools are required to provide the service because of the same law.

  9. Special education is like regular education except that in special education students individual differences are addressed with special strategies or techniques to help the students learn the same material as their typical peers.

Students with cognitive disabilities, learning disabilities and even students that are gifted and talented are in special education.

Often you hear peers talking about special education because they do not understand the differences and why some students are in special education.  Not everyone in special education has a visual disability that indicates that they are disabled.

Being in special education does not mean you cannot learn or reach a potential of your non disabled peers. I proudly admit that I have a learning disability. I admit that I had special education services. But with all that I earned my undergrad degree in education and earned a masters in education. The potential of an individual is not determined by what track of education you had but the effort that you put into your education.

  10. it means they need more help than regulare students in exstream cases (which speds are associated w/) they are the kids on the short bus I was a sped, now I'm on the honor role in AP classes so it really doesnt mean anything just you might need more help at times
