What is spinal meningitis?

I read a book called the PET SEMETARY- it is spelled like that, its by stephen king, and they mentioned spinal meningitis, so i wanted more info...

Both Meningities and SPINAL Meningitis are one and the same as this disease is an inflammation of the membranes (meninges) and cerebrospinal fluid surrounding your brain and spinal cord, usually due to the spread of an infection. The swelling associated with meningitis often triggers the "hallmark" symptoms of this condition, including headache, fever and a stiff neck.

    Acute bacterial meningitis usually occurs when bacteria enter the bloodstream and migrate to the brain and spinal cord. But it can also occur when bacteria directly invade the meninges, as a result of an ear or sinus infection or a skull fracture. -
