What is star alliance?

hello I am going to Portugal and I use Tap Air Portugal. I have used Tap over 10 times I wanted to know what the h**l star alliance means i see it on the plane is there any benefits to it?

Star Alliance is a group of airlines that cooperate for their frequent flyer programs. You can generally get miles on the other flights within the group added in to your frequent flyer account and you can use miles on the partner airlines for award travel.

There are three primary airline alliances:  

www.oneworld.com

www.skyteam.com

www.staralliance.com

The alliance members cooperate, and you can use your frequent flier membership on one to collect miles on any of them.  For example, if you belong to TAP's program you can earn miles on that program by flying with Lufthansa or any other Star Alliance airline. Alternatively, you could earn miles on United or any of the other members by flying with TAP.
