  1. If a steam turbine is driving an electrical generator, and is to be brought on line with other generators, it must be at an rpm to generate the same frequency, and must be in phase with the other power supply.  The control room watches a device that tells them how far out if sync it is, and the speed is "inched" up or down until they are in phase.  Then the new turbine is switched on.

    To throw the new generator on line without phasing and synchronizing can result in extensive damage.

    Once they are in phase and synchronized, they keep each other synchronized.
