  1. It's things like grading an essay, or a "show work" problem.  Any time where the grader's judgement has to be used in deciding how well the subject did.

    The complement to it is objective assessment, where there's no wiggle room...you got it right or you didn't.  Multiple choice, true-false and numerical-only (without considering the work) problems are objective.

    The advantage of subjective assessment is that it can give a more complete picture of what the subject really understands.  The disadvantages are that it's more time-consuming and it's more vulnerable to scorer bias.
