i thought sushi was raw fish rolled up in some seaweed and rice...

There are many kinds of sushi mostly vegetarian.  Basically two types.

a. Maki zushi

b. Nigiri zushi

All sushi is made with vinegared rice.

Koreans also make sushi.

There is processed seaweed for wrapping the sushi and inside makisushi roll various kinds of vegetables in thin strips.

Nigiri sushi is fish pieces on top of ball of rice.  They can be mostly raw but also steam cooked.   Don't forget the wasabi green mustard.  The hot spicy mustard hits you right at the beginning of your first bite but the taste does not

linger so that it burns like chili peppers.

The word "sushi" has NOTHING to do with fish/raw fish or any meat for that matter.

Sushi refers to the rice and its preparation in vinegar etc.

it depends on what kind... but main ingredients are rice, nori (seaweed wrapper) and anything else you want to put in like some sort of veggies or fish or even meat, and it doesn't have to raw if don't like.

the basic is made of rice (mixed w/ a little japanese vinegar) wrapped in dried seaweed (called Nori) with raw fish/crab stick (artificial crab meat), vegetables(cucumber), fruit (avocado, mango), japanese mayonnaise and wasabi.

some add fish roe (on top), black sesame seed.
