What is suspended imposition of sentence

what is suspended imposition of sentence. could anyone tell me what that mean. he is in jail on a theft charge, and he didn't pay his fines ,or didn't go see probation officer. they gave him a sentence, of 10 yrs with 5yrs with arkansas separtment of correction and 5 yrs parole when he get out.

  1. "Imposition of sentence suspended" means that the sentence imposed will be suspended (stopped/delayed) for a period of time and as long as certain criteria are met during that time frame, the sentence won't have to be carried out.

    Ex.  Sentenced to 10 years; imposition of sentence suspended for five of those years as long as defendant does not have any same or similar violations.  (Then, if another violation occurs for which the defendant is convicted, they can impose a new sentence for the new crime and then add on the 5 years that were suspended in the first instance.)
