  9. "Tales of Woe" is a book written by one of Queen Victoria's children, Louise Caroline Alberta, under the Pseudonym "Saffron". Born in 1848, she realised at an early age that she was more attracted to women than to men. She was however forced into marrying John Campbell, Duke of Argyll. They had no children. The book details her various liaisons with women; she described these furtive liaisons as her "woes".

    Banned in the UK, the book was printed a number of time is Paris. It is an erotic yet sad journal, giving much insight into the social positions of lesbians in the Victorian era. It has long been out of print.
