What is taraweeh prayer and should i do it, i am shia.?

Im a shia muslim, and i hear people talking about taraweeh prayer. what is this, and should i be doing it? or do shias dont do it?

if so why dont shia do it.

Tarawih is a prayer during the nights of Ramadan that last between 8-20 rakats. Its sunnah and recommened to do.

But shias think its Bid'ah.

dear friend, i am shia as well, but first i am a muslim, and a muslim's heart n brain both say that u should do it as it is also included in worshipping Allah. As u know that any act of worshipping Allah cannot b wrong. There is no harm if u do a sunni or wahabi or ahmedi act that can please Allah. So if u want to do it go ahead I am sure Allah will b more than pleased with u. It is not obligatory but there is no other month besides Muharram in which this many blessings come down upon the followers.

Shia people do it as well but it is not given any name....they just keep on praying like sunnis do n believe me not all sunnis do it likewise not every shia does it.

Taraweeh is not done in Shiaism.

But in Islam it is done.

The prophet (pbuh) did it.

I am a shia as well.....

the fact about taraweeh is that it is a type of prayers which has no basis...and Prophet Muhammad (a.s) never performed it...the fact is that taraweeh was started during the time of the caliphate of Umar.

even if we accept the sunni view that taraweeh was started by prophet....the view further goes on to say that he stopped praying that prayer....

Instead it is always advisable to beutify ure aamaals in this month by reading quran and reciting the dua's described to us by the Ahlul-Bayt (a.s)....

Taraweeh is night prayer that is done in jama'ah during Ramadan.

I heard that Shia believe it's bid'ah, but sunni believe it's sunnah, just like tahajjud prayer in other month. praying tahajjud in jama'ah is not wrong, and the time to pray tahajjud is after isha until before fajr.

Of course you can join us to pray taraweeh with niyat to have night prayer in jama'ah. you don't see anything wrong with that, do you?

@ answerer above me, can you please clarify your answer about month of muharram. did you mean that muharram is better than ramadan?

taraweeh prayers are extra prayers muslims do during ramadhan as a way to get extra credits from Allah swt, so to speak. and is strongly recommended. If you are a muslim and you believe in Allah swt and the prophet muhammad pbuh, go for it. It's for Allah swt.
