  1. Most tutors receive training as teachers and they adapt their training to individual students or to small groups. In a way it is similar to having an IEP for a student that one tutors. The major difference being that in most cases the student is still registered in a school with a teacher or teachers calling the shots, The tutor has to be careful in the paperwork of reporting hours and not being alone with a student. The tutor follows the lead of the classroom teacher in the curriculum and lessons to be followed and where possible stays close to what the student is learning in school. The tutor is an an enviable position of seeing what errors or difficulties the student has and in overcoming them.

    More information is below.

  2. In a nutshell, you need to be a good evaluator on where the student is at and how to get them to where they need to be. A good tutor accomplishes this through many skills.

Learning styles and an awareness of learning disabilities can help you identify potential reasons for a student to be behind on skills. Knowing how to work with what the student 'brings to the table' can mean less frustration for both student and tutor.

Content knowledge is an obvious skill that is needed. But more than that, having a wide array of activities that can make learning the content effective and enjoyable is essential. This can mean spending time combing internet, websites varied curriculum, and support resource supplier's catalogues. With these resources, you must be able to take the student step by step in a well thought out progression.

If you tutor online, you will need to get a good handle on the technology you will be using. I use Elluminate, Moodle, and VoiceThread together to give support that is both immediate and 24/7 accessible. If you do not use Moodle, you will need to learn a bit about how to set up a website. Personally, I recommend Moodle. It is more than a website, it is a course management system. It can support your efforts and make the student's task tracking much easier for both of you.
