What is teething like?

My exclusively breastfed baby is 10 weeks old. He will not take a pacifier or bottle. He doesn't know how to suck on them b/c it isnt a breast. I am trying to get him to use them. For the past three times I tried to get him to use the pacifier, he bites down hard on it and on my finger (which is in the little hole in the pacifier - its a soothie from the hospital). He is biting down hard and moving it all around on his gums. Is it possible that he is teething. He has been rather fussy lately.

  1. Around 12 weeks my son's tooth came through but it went right back into the gums a few days later and then at 6 months it came back...and now at 17 month we have 12 teeth..So it is possible that he is teething but I doubt it..He just doesn't want the passy and I wouldn't push it..it is one less thing you have to wean him off of...

  2. We all thought my daughter was going to get her teeth early (like 3 months) because she started gnawing on everything, and was drooling like crazy. But she didn't get her first tooth until she was almost 8 months. So I think this is just what babies do.

  3. My little cousin who is now 1 didnt take a pacifier. He did take bottles though. He was teething. We knew because he was crying a lot. Teething is very painful especially for a baby. He even got an infection that caused him to get white pimples on his tongue. So if your child gets that, take him to the doctor immediately. But it goes away in like 10 days.

  4. mine did that since about 2-3 months and was also drooling so much Id have to change her bib 3+ times a day! She didnt get her 1st tooth until 7.5 months. so, yeah, he could be teething, but it might take a few months to see any teeth

my daughter wont suck on a paci but she will chew on it!

  5. I also exclusively breastfeed and my son at first would not take the pacifier.  I was told to buy several different brands in which I tried the NUK, Soothie and Avent types.  He ended up liking the NUK and then went to Avent.  He did not do well with the Soothie.

It seems as though it is too early for a baby to be teething prior to 2 months old.  He could have colic, which could be causing the fussiness or not getting enough sleep?  You may want to call pediatrician if you are concerned...they may be able to provide some support and ideas for you.

  6. He's teeth could be moving in.  or he is just checking out the nipple it is something new to him.
