What is teh difference between a Promise Ring and Engagement Ring?

Some people think they are the same and some don't. Can you please explain the difference.

The difference between the PR and ER is that the promise ring is more like a going steady ring. It means that we will not date anyone else or have relationship with anyone else. The ER says that I really want to marry you and you start making plans.  The way it is presented is also makes a difference.  If you just ask to get marry but at a later time period. An Enagement is where you put a lot of effort into it.  The rings themself doesn't really make a difference.

a promise ring is a way in saying that someday you'll marry so it's like a pre-engagement ring and the engagement ring is given when they are ready to start planning their wedding

I received a promise ring a few years ago & now I am engaged to the same guy. The promise ring is ususally alot less pricey ring that means they will stay with you & eventually get married to you. The engagement ring means ur ready to plan your wedding!

The difference are the words "Will you marry me?" Thats what the engagement ring means. The promise ring is more like "I'll buy you an engagement ring one day in the future"

It is true that the both symbolize a promise, but they are not the same thing.

One says (i.e. Promise), "I love you, will be committed to you, and would like to someday marry you."

The other says (i.e. engagement), "I love you, will be committed to you, and want to start my life with you on such-and-such date."

I'd say a promise ring is for younger people (maybe not), but a promise ring can be used for ANY type of promise. My friend has a promise ring she gave herself that symbolized her promise to herself to be successful. Some use promise rings as "I will not have s*x before marriage" promises. But, they could also be used for a boy and a girl. An engagment ring can't be taken any other way than "I'M GETTING MARRIED!" I hope that made sense and it helps you out.

A promise ring is like a symbol that the person wants to stay faithful to you throughout your entire relationship, and even maybe one day marry you. But an engagement ring is when you're proposing to someone to get married to them.
