What is term norm mean for sociology?

what are the importants of norms in society ? what does this mean and whats the word norm mean? i also have to do a experiement of breaking a norm? what should i write about? thanks in advance guys, i will definitely give you guys points =]

  1. An experiment of breaking a norm could be turning up to a black tie party (formal party) in jeans and a t-shirt, this would be breaking a norm.

    A Norm is the expected behaviour in society. Obviously you should note that different societies have different norms. I.e. In some places it's ok to eat dog, but in others this is not ok.

    Norms are very important in society because if they did not exist there would be a state of "anarchy" - Durkheim - this basically means that everyone would run riot, because there would be nothing to inforce the sense of right and wrong, leading to the breakdown of society.


  2. a norm is "an understood rule for accepted and expeted behavior. Norms presribe 'proper' behavior." (Myers, 2007)
