I know its when steps are cut into the mountain, but how does that make the area suitable for growing crops?

  1. Terrace farming is also in the city, when apartment owners only have a terrace to use for growing/planting.............

It's been done in New York for years, also on the roof tops.

  2. On a steep hillside, the farmers dig into the hill to flatten out an area so the water will not run down the hill.  The hill will eventually look like a large staircase because of the terraces.

  3. By helping avoid soil erosion.  It keeps the land there.
