Sea lions, polar bears, goldfish, dolphins, chimps, and rhinos all can read.  They just usually don't feel like it.  That's why you never see them doing it.

Actually there are studies being done with many types of animals for character recognition.

While Parrots and Macaws have been able to comprehend sentences and concepts I haven't heard of any actual character recognition done.

However within the last 2 years I have heard and read studies on teaching dogs to read. They've been able to interpret the sounds of multiple characters, and even put them together to make commands.

The methods used to teach dogs OCR (Optical Character Recognition) AKA: Reading leaves no room for doubt that they are actually understanding the characters.

They will be shown a new command in writing for the first time, composed of character/sound relations they've been taught, and will actually perform the action.

There are also times where the dog has been known to mis-interpret one of the characters, such that the command "sit" might be read as "hit" and they tap the ground for instance.

Very interesting stuff, I don't remember all the species the tests were being done with, Retrievers, Shepherds etc.
