Hey, I tried looking it up in the Internet but could not find anything helpful.

My question is what that thin plastic sealing layer that some book have when you buy them new.

Anyone knows is there are sealing machines available for sale in order to seal some books?

Thanks in advance

  1. In Australia it's called "Contact", but could be called anything really - it's plastic, it sticks and comes in different patterns

    :-P

Not sure about Sealing Machines, but know you can get things (certificates, awards, letters, pictures, notes etc) Laminated with a hot press type plastic

  2. Duct tape

  3. The thin plastic sealing material is polyeurothane.  It is placed around the book and then applied heat shrinks it.  It is the same with larger items that have a thicker plastic used.

The packaging process begins with the final scan of the book using the bar-code located on the cover of the book.  It is then sent to an automatic scale that ensures all pages are there.  (if not, it is rejected)

The book then goes to another area by conveyer belt where it is first covered by a sheet of the product.  Then i quickly goes through an oven that causes the plastic to shrink (@350 degrees).  after that it goes to an area where it is placed in a carton for shipping.

If everything goes well, no human hands touch the book at any stage of the process.

  4. Well, the material is plastic, and I don't think that they sell the machines (they belong to the publishers), unless you are talking about a laminate machine.
