Hi, well my mare is now 18 yrs old. And i feel that the hard ground is to much for her all the time. However, i will be riding her on trails, and on the ground. But for training, and everything, and just riding around. I would love to have a round pen. I want to practice doing poles, so i might not make a round pen. But any ways, what is that sand stuff called that they use. I was going to look for some one ebay, but i couldnt find any actual sand. It was just a bunch of other stuff.

And what is it called when its not a round pen, but like a giant box. LOL srry i have never really dealt with this. I ussally just ride her around my yard. But im sick of that. I want to do poles with her, and two feet jumping.

  1. It is just dirt, hun. Um you might want to start her off in a round pen, but then let her off in an arena. IF ONLY you have room. Take her to the nearest ranch or otherwise.... you can ride her and jump her there! You can probably just go to the nearest tack shop to buy some "sand".

  2. Horsejumper, making an arena is a little more complicated then just putting down some sand.  You'll need to build a foundation for your arena, or the sand will just get worked into the ground and disappear.  It could also become very uneven and lumpy, and that will hurt your mare's legs more then hard ground will.  You can probably get sand locally from a quarry, builder supply or hardware store.  It's heavy, and having it shipped through the post would be prohibitively expensive.  You also want to make sure it has good drainage, or you'll end up with a pond, not an arena.

    Good luck!

  3. ummm I would not look on ebay for sand...mabey check locally and they would be able to recommend the right type of sand. And that would be called an outdoor arena.

  4. Yikes! What is with people tonight?

I did a quick search and found this pdf online about arena footing:

Also I've never used them but this site also came up in my search:

  6. to clear things up a little for some of the younger crowd on here,a "round pen" is a small round pen for training horses and can be from 15' to 40' in diameter,a "corral" is a western term for a small pen that is also used for training horses under saddle and holding livestock and is called a "paddock" in english terms that is typically larger than a round pen.an "arena" is a large area that is bound by tall fences or stock panels that is used in rodeo, gaming and english riding and is typically longer than it is wide creating a rectangle for the purpose of riding a horse or rodeo events.a "pasture" is an area that is bound by fences and can be small(5 acres)or large (a full section) and is used for feeding livestock or turnout of horses.a "field" is not bound by fences and is typically used by farmers for growing crops.

i almost forgot i use medium grain sand mixed with 30% clay in my arena that is 6" deep.i use an old tractor to dress the arena for good footing but allow for good shock absorption for comfort for the horses and livestock and it also cuts down on the dust.

  7. That ''non-circle" thing is an arena...or a ring....the ''sand stuff'' is sand, or peatmoss (thats what we have)....if shes 18 & hard ground is hurting her...you shouldnt be jumping or pole-bending...but oh well, you will anyways....I personally like the peatmoss better than sand, its softer and nicer to the horses legs (if it gets stuck in their boots, it doesnt rub like sand does)

    Good Luck!

EDIT: No Problem! Sorry about the leg thing...I must have mis-read your question...i thought you said that the hard ground was hurting her legs...but it just says the hard ground is too much for her all the time...whoops!!

  8. My vets use a product made from shredded tires.

Here's a publication with some good info.  You can search under "arena base" or "equine arena base" or "horse arena base" and find different brands and products.

  9. corral

  10. I think it's just called sand, that's all we use in our arena<- that's what we call it. Some call it a ring some and arena, some a corral, it doesn't really matter. You probably won't find any on ebay. Try going to your local lumber store or outdoor place, they probably sell sand (you're gonna need a lot to fill an arena) or at least can point you in the right direction.

I hope I helped you! Good luck with doing poles in your arena (:

  11. well if something is not a circle and is shaped like a box then it is most likely a square...and yes thats grainy stuff is called sand...dont worry u almost had it=D
