What is that horrible sound that Fisher Cats make?

They sound like some animal is slowly dying. I've been told its the Fisher Cats in the neighborhood. Why do they make that horrible sound and what can I do to make them stop.

There is no such thing as a 'fisher cat'. In Asia there is the fishing cat - here's an image of one living up to its name:
