What is that movie tool they use when they say action?

its like black and white stripped and it has the name of the movie director and the scene and they slap the top piece down when action is said ?

  4. It's called a slate. It's used to sync the audio to the video because when you are shooting on a film camera, you record to an external audio device. in post where the cut the film together, they can pin point the clap sound by a visual spike in the audio wave and for the video you can visualize when the two ends (with the strips) come together. that's where you match the two up and BLAMO! you got synced sound. the person who holds the slate is usually the 1st or 2nd assistant camera man. hope that helped.
