What is that nasty smell people and their clothes acquire after being outside?

It's similar to the smell cheap metal gives off when you hold it in your hands. It gets worse the hotter and more humid it is outside. I've noticed that, within the United States, the smell is stronger in some states and even cities than in others. And it's much less noticeable - or even non-existent - in other countries, regardless of the weather.

i know! i live in fresno and if you've ever been here, it's h**l on earth, literally. and we're number four in the nation for the worst pollution. so, all those free radicals mixed with b.o, is horrid.

Fresh air?  LOL!  It could be ozone.

It has to do with peoples diets, and if they have been physically active or sweaty. What you smell is sweat and the body getting rid of electro lights. Have you paid attention to the gateraide commercials when they talk about this? I know it sounds silly, but true. Hope that helps you out!

I know what you mean, I have no clue what it is. I am pregnant so my sense of smell is heightened, and it bothers me!

~~I know cause I live in California. It's smog and it really smells awful! Must be why you noticed it being worse in some states than others. I can even smell it on my dogs after they have been outside for a few minutes. The only time we don't get that lovely odor is in the winter!~~
