well, if you are working in these countries through the United Nations, then you are a UN aid worker/relief worker or a soldier....but otherwise there are various other ways to travel to third world or underprivilegedd places and provide help.

There are dozens of development agencies that employ volunteers. If you use the advanced search feature here for the words "Peace Corps", you will get a number of sponsored links. Some of them have the word "Peace" in them. The VSO doesn't, but they are the only one I know of that

1) Isn't the Peace Corps

2) Will pay you a modest salary while you volunteer

The rest are set up so that you pay your own way (or you get you friends, neighbors and/or church to sponsor you) and they give you a task to do.
