It's called the Automat, and it was popular, I believe, in the 50s and 60s.  It is no longer around. ^..^

Bamn! in the East Village on St Mark's Place and Second Avenue.  You put your money into a slot and you can open the little window and take your food.  They're not really a "restaurant" - more of a fast snack place - the menu's pretty limited:

automat and it is no longer in operation because the chef inside died from old age and no one has replaced him!!!
