  1. A lot of people knock on the melon — a thud indicates the melon is ripe; a hollow sound indicates it's still got a way to go.

Another way of testing the ripeness of a watermelon is to check its bottom or yellow area. The area where a watermelon has rested on the truck, or on the ground, or on the fruit stand, tends to flatten out and turn yellow. The wider the spread of this area, and the more intensely yellow the color, the sweeter and riper the watermelon.

Watermelons are in season from May through September.

  2. the hollow sound when you thump on it, and if there is still a stem attached to the watermelon, if it is like brown and old looking, theres a better chance it will be ripe too! and if it smells fresh...

  3. hollow when knock just like rap sock

  4. a "thud", also you may smell where the stem should be, most melons will smell like the fruit strongly right there if they are ripe

  5. A good watermelon is found in its firmness (no mushy parts) and in the amount of what appears to be 'scratchy marks" on it's exterior rind.  These goldish scratchy looking marks are apparently made by bees and act as a pollenator of sorts which increases the sweetness and flavor of a good watermelon.  SO look for one with LOTS of those markings on them.  Some people avoid those marks because they think they are flaws on the rind.  But looking for a perfect exterior only will get you an inferior watermelon.  No doubt there are more technically accurate terms for these things but I am not a foodologist so I go with what  I know! : ) enjoy!

  6. well, to find a good watermelon, they have to be in season. then you tap on the watermelon, and listen for a hollow sound. if there's one, it's ripe.

  7. Put your ear close to the watermelon. And listen. When you hear a small voice saying, "Yes, I'm a good one," it's a sure sign.

I'm so sorry. I couldn't resist. I believe it's a hollow, wood sound- like gently knocking on a desk.

  8. You want it to sound hollow. If you thump on it and its dull, solid sounding, it wont be very good. Also...if you look at the spot on the watermelon where its been laying on the ground, you want that to be a yellow color, not white.

  9. you knock on it, when it comes with a hollow sound, its good.
