We have acquired serious control issues along our way--greedy little buggers that we are.  Empires have risen with good intent, only to be destroyed by greed & power appeasement that possesses leadership & trickles down to the masses.

There's a saying that goes "To know a person's true character, give him power".  Even the sweetest of people can turn ugly fast in such a challenge.

Thankfully, not ALL are like this, but it does cover the vast majority...everywhere.

Survival of the fittest or Kill or be Killed people with this mentality which is most if not all of the human race including me. This leads to poverty and war. Just about every negative aspect of this world is because people think "doing what it takes to get what you want" mentality is how to get things done and humans are selfish in this regard.

Indifference. There's nothing sadder than someone who just doesn't care enough to want to improve his or her own life and doesn't care about much of anything else either.

I'd have to say it's ENVY.  Envy begets greed, anger, lust, and other sins.  People can't be content with what they have... they just have to have what the other person has.
