  1. fastest - taxi

cheapest - local bus (tour busses arnt that much more either)

most interesting - rent a dirt bike, $7-10 per day,, go for a 250cc and check the brakes first

  2. If you go as a tourist, do not ask for the fastest and the cheapest. It might cause you so much inconveniences. You should go there the most interesting way whatever it costs. Enjoy every hour of your travel.

  3. I was going to say riding on the back of a moped, but you want "route" not "way" I guess.

Cambodia does have a reasonable number of roads connecting various sites.  You could actually go to www.mapquest.com  and look for a route that will give you what you want.  Of course flying will always be the fastest but it doesn't fulfill 2 or 3.  I flew to Siem Reap from Saigon, but I would love to cross overland next time.

There are some parks in the northeastern part of the country, but because it is relatively close to Siem Reap you would have to go out of your way to get to the interesting things to the south.  I would recommend finding a boat going onto Tonle Sap (that huge-*** lake in the middle of the country) when you get to SR.  Would add a bit to the trip.  You can take a 6 hour boat ride to Phnom Penh from SR over Tonle Sap.

One word of caution:  the rural area you are planning to cross does still have a far number of landmines.  Be careful when leaving the road.  Once in Siem Reap you should be pretty safe.

  4. It depends on where you come in.  Assuming you're by the river, you can catch a local bus down Rt 7 to Kampong Cham, then up Rt 6 to Siem Reap (gateway to Angkor).  That will be the fastest and probably cheapest, but it will also hurt like the dickens.

Cambodian roads are in terrible condition.  They were paved in the 50s: since then, they've been bombed by the Americans, Vietnamese, and Khmer Rouge for 40 years.  The roads in the south (from Phnom Penh to Sihanoukville) are newly repaved and in excellent condition, but that's not the case up north or east.  As a result, you'll go over not just potholes by craters.  I took a local bus from Phnom Penh to Saigon four years ago and my *** still hurts!

So the best way to go is to take a boat.  You should be able to get a ferry to go down the Mekong to Phnom Penh.  From there, it's hella easy to get a boat up the Tonle Sap to Siem Reap.

Actually, I've just learned that the road north has been paved fairly recently (great news!).  So, here's the best way to go:

By river, take a boat from Don Khone or Don Khong to Voeung Kam ($2-$5). From Voeung Kam, get a Cambodian boat to Stung Treng for $10. Then take a bus to Phnom Penh on the Phnom Penh Sorya Transport for 42,000 riel (about $10).

    I hope that helps!
