  1. There ARE two types, intake and exhaust. They have been defined by another answer. The intake manifold is what the carb is mounted to. A problem with that one would cause the engine to run leaner (in most cases) or even to not idle at all. Called a vacuum leak. The exhaust can be cracked and cause excessive  noise, backfiring and in  some cases burned piston. I suggest if there is a problem, you get it seen about. Either could potentially cause engine damage. A good mechanical ability and a service manual is really all you need to work on that bike (plus a set of metric tools).

  2. the intake manifold is the part that goes in between the carbi and the head of the motor and exhaust manifold goes from the motor to the exhaust pipe

  3. I love it when someone owns an older very high maintenance bike and they are clueless about the mechanical items of the bike, they just figure they add gas and ride it.

The fact is when owning a dirt bike they require very high maintenance and a good mechanic-able ability or lots and lots of money to have a trained mechanic to do it

  4. All good answers., but a 'manifold' (with an 'i') is any chamber or cavity that serves as a kind of collector for other feeder pipes or tubes...so, you could have a carburetor which delivers atomized gasoline into an intake manifold, and two or more cylinders could then use that gas/air mix ... or you could have two or more pipes coming out of your cylinders and feed them into an exhaust manifold which would then route the gases thru the muffler...

    p.s., if you didn't know, i'm glad you're asking...how else to learn?
