I have to write a persuasive piece for English about the women's round, but I'm not sure what it is. I've searched the net, but the pages I've come up with aren't very helpful. Perhaps a fan or two could help me out? Thanks :)

  1. It is (was) a celebration of the contributions of women to footy. Sam Mostyn is on the commission, she was on the front cover of the Record, it just came in the post today (Saturday) in the USA. Moms, sisters, aunts and grandmothers get the boys to the footy, work the ticket booths, umpire, work the food stands, ushers in the stands and barrack. The league and footy in general are just patting the women in the game on the back and acknowledging their contributions to football.

I just wish the league and Andrew Demetriou would understand international television and international marketing of the AFL to the USA like they understand the contribution of women to the game.

Sorry for another edition of bitching about television coverage of the AFL in America, but I will continue to complain about it until it is resolved.

  2. Basically the AFL has a round every year that acknowledges the contributions that women bring to the game, hence it's called the women's round.  There are activities and events that are held to highlight and celebrate these contributions.

Numbers of women involved with AFL:

    48,054 - total female participants in 2006

    24,145 - girls participating in Auskick 2006

    2,255 - accredited female coaches

191,000 - AFL or club female members

41.5% - percentage of television audience viewed by females

    35,000 - female volunteers
