What is the American experience? How does the book Johnny Got His Gun relate to it?

Part of a presentation I'm doing for my American Literature class is about how Johnny Got His Gun by Dalton Trumbo relates to the American experience. I'm not really sure what it means by American experience or how the book relates to it. Your help is appreciated.

Talk about how it is the experience for the unlucky people who get sent to do the dirty work of corrupt politicians. The American experience of war, and death. I really don't know what else to say, sounds like a difficult assignment.
