  1. Alice Springs or "The Alice" or ''The Red Centre' is the entrance to Australia's heart and documented as the 'Centre of Australia' - although not geographically exact - it's situated 1524 km from Darwin and 293 km north of the South Australian border, Alice Springs is the second major town in the Northern Territory. Alice Springs is a popular tourist destination, where you can visit Uluru (Ayers Rock) and  Kata Tjuta (The Olgas)  Also famous for the Camel Cup - http://www.camelcup.com.au

  2. There is also the yearly camel races in the dry river bed . Quite a big fun day to be had :)

  3. It only started as a settlement because they needed a repeater station for the overland telegraph line and that was the halfway point between Adelaide and Darwin and there was under ground water there. Later on it was discovered there was gold about 100klm to the east and that attracted more people. Hope this helps
