I need to get a mileage log put together for my CPA and I dont want to write off too many miles and put up a red flag, but defiently want to get a semi good tax break for my mileage. In 2007 I only had my business from May to December so I would only need an averge for 6 months.

  1. Not to mention that it's too late to come up with a mileage log for 2007 by writing one up in 2008.

  2. Your mileage log is intended to reflect what you drove, not what the average may be for others in your profession.  What your log reflects also must be reasonable for "your" circumstances.  l may drive 50 miles a day because I do home visits and you may never do more than to and from work.  Being reasonable for your circumstances is much more important than an average for those in your profession.

  3. there is no average - if you had a shop, mileage should be zero - commuting miles is not deductible, other wise it's your responsibility to keep track of trip s to clients houses etc - you're the only one that will know where you drove

  4. Mileage?  Do you go to your client's homes?  If they come to you, then you have no mileage writeoff.  Commuting miles (from your home to your shop and back) are not deductible.

  5. When you get around to keeping a real mileage log, you don't get to deduct your commuting miles (to and from your shop).  Your business miles would most likely be small...when you run business errands during the day.
