  1. You pontiac guys.... don't shoot me but, dollar for dollar ......yes a small block Chevy/700R4 combo. These combonations are every where. You can locate a wrecked 89 Chevy squad car and have a great, reliable car.The 88 350 still used a carb so that may be something to consider. The 89 700R4 had a great 1st gear and the overdrive helps with fuel economy.Any Mid to late 80's Caprice is a great option and they are cheap.

By the way I own a 67 and a 68 Firebird. A big block Chevy and yes a 455 Poncho motor. The small block Chevy is still cheaper to build.

  2. There aren't any V4's.

The "best" engine for a 1975 Firebird would be a 455.  The transmission you want with that is a Borg Warner Super T-10, although 5 and 6 speeds have become pretty desireable as well.

The problem with this is that the"best" engine is not at all fuel efficient.

If you wanted to build a fuel efficient Firebird, you'd probably be best to go with a high compression inline six, and again a 5 or 6 speed.

  3. Sorry, what is a V4?

Anyhow, there is an answer.  Look up original 1975 Chev Monza (a rare car) specs and find one for parts.

Rebuild the drivetrain, you will end up with 4 speed while I recommend 5 or 6 but that won't fit.

Yes, put Monza parts, all polished and tuned into your Firebird for a wicked ride, which is good!

Some Australian and British General Motors 4 cylinders can also be considered.

I liked the Merc Capri, too bad, not GM.  But Opels are fantastic!

Cosworth also re-made a Vega earlier, see that for some fun!
