  1. As usual we have the assorted selection of people who really have no idea what is going on answering with the style they train, or someone they no trains, or that they have read about.

My suggestion rather then try and pick a style at first is to do a search on here about how to find a good school and instructor, and what to watch out for. next make a list of everything that is available in your area, and visit each school, watch classes, and ask questions of the instructor.

Take the what to look for klist and compare it to the schools, and seperate them into two catgories..possible and no way. Next decide what you want most out of training, and then research the styles taught at the schools and see which one might give you more of what you are looking for.

I would not really ask about styles on here and what they are about, because as some of these answers show people are clueless in many instances, and just say what they have seen.

For instance Okinawin karate does have striking, kicks, punches, knees, and elbows, but it also contains man standing grappling motions as well.

More importent then style is a good instructor and a good school. If you find these everything else will fall in place.

    Good luck.

  2. How about Karate? There's a good article about it in the source link. Good luck with whatever you choose!

  3. Brizilian Jui-Jistu                   Long Lims + Srength = others broken body parts lol     jk BJJ is the sport for you

  4. It depends on what your goal is. If you want to stay fit, karate and tae kwon do, or kickboxing are great. To learn how to defend yourself, try Krav Maga. For ground work, Brazilian JJ and ninjitsu. If you want to be a tough striker, Sambo or Muy Thai would be good.

  5. I would say Taekwondo. It focuses on all aspects of what you'd expect a martial art to focus on. Taekwondo, teaches both hand strikes, such as a knife hand strike, and kicks, such as an Axe kick. It also teaches locks, throws, and grappling. (sparring) Also, from my experience, (and I've gone to quite a few different dojo's) all the instructors, are focused on making sure you can execute the technique correctly, before moving on to more advanced material. If you started now, i would expect that you could achieve black belt level in around 4~5 years. Also, since you say that your quick, grappling will be a lot of fun for you, because, you will find that your height, and dexterity will allow you to become extremely skilled in this Korean martial art. I personally am a 2ND Don Black belt, more commonly known as a 2ND "degree" black belt, however in taekwondo it's called Don, not Degree. As for your friend, he will most likely enjoy taekwondo. It truly is a great martial art. The problem with doing mixed martial arts is that, each martial art has a different way of doing more or less the same technique, and so, by combining different forms of martial arts, it is extremely easy to confuse the way to perform an attack, or block. Because of this reason, i urge you to just pick one martial art and see it through to the end. You wont be disappointed, and neither will your friend. i hope this answer helps :P

  6. Ok it sounds like either taekwondo or karate would be good for you. It is mainly comprised of kicks, but it does also teach hand moves and some throws. Oh yeah and don't worry about your unfair advantage against smaller people, in the martial arts weight, size, and strength mean nothing.

  7. Get in some mixed martials arts. A combonation of wrestling jujitsu and boxing.
