What is the Best Way to learn JAVA?

I have to learn Java for school, what is the best way to learn? I don't necessarily want the fastest way to learn it, although speed would be appreciated. I just need to be able to program with Java competently.

I would say that you can learn everything you need from the internet for free. It is a great way to learn if you are very visual, and learn especially well from examples. I personally just did this recently, and I understand a great deal of java now.

        Even so, it does take time to find information that is not outdated; and if you learn better from explanation, I would get a book.  I found "Core Java 1" to be a very helpful book. It covers many topics of both beginning and advanced nature.

If you choose to use the internet, I would definitely start with the java tutorials which can be found at the sun/java website, they cover a very large range of java's features.

Buy a book and go through it. That's how i started to programming. I recommend Deitel's How to Program series.
