    Tip:

Put a sheet of aluminum foil on the floor of the oven, underneath, but not touching, the heating element, to keep your oven clean. If a spill does make it past the aluminum foil, clean it immediately to keep it from setting in and becoming too stubborn to remove.

  2. Argh!  My least favorite activity.  I remove the racks, put them in a garbage bag, pour in half a bottle of ammonia, tie tightly and let them sit outside for a day......hopefully in the sun...to loosen the crud.

Meanwhile I use an aerosol oven cleaner and saturate the oven, close the door and walk away for at least an hour (I've even done this over night.  Any hard spot can be encourage to let loose with steel wool.  When finished, remember to rinse out the oven with dilute vinegar to remove any oven cleaner residue.

My mother preferred to clean by using just ammonia.  She'd fill a nonreactive pot with ammonia, place it in the oven and then let the fumes soften the baked on stuff.  She'd let this sit over night.  I never had much success with this.
