What is the Best way to teach Metric Conversion

Question

I need to teach a class Metric Conversion, like meters to kilometers, deciliters to liters, etc. I want to teach them using the best way possible. I want to let them learn it and apply it and never forget it.

One way I was thinking of was letting them know how heavy a kilogram is or how long a kilometer is, since we all know how heavy a pound is and how long a mile is because we experienced it. My teacher told me that it was a very good idea, but I don't know how I should go about doing it or if its really a great idea.

I just need to know what is the best way to teach metric conversion.

The metric system is a decimalised system of measurement. It exists in several variations, with different choices of base units, though the choice of base units does not affect its day-to-day use. Over the last two centuries, different variants have been considered the metric system. Since the 1960s the International System of Units ("Système International d'Unités" in French, hence "SI") has been the internationally recognised standard metric system.
